Ms Eaton's book about John Ross is overwhelmingly sympathetic to John Ross. But, when one of John Ross's decisions are controversial, she does mention that honest and good people did disagree with John Ross's decisions. This strikes me as fair. Still the controversy over the Cherokee removal remains heated even today. While Ms Eaton acknowledges that people of good character and good will disagreed with John Ross and were murdered for that reason, she does not discuss the other side of the issue. But she does acknowledge it's existence.To me and I suspect most of the Major Ridge supporters, The reality was that the Cherokee were going to be removed or exterminated. Major Ridge and his group, including the Daugherty's that I descended from realized that fact and wished to accept a bad and unfair deal rather suffer from at best a "Trail of Tears" and at worst extermination. Major Ridge came to understand that and tried to have the Cherokee removal be as bloodless as possible. John Ross chose to believe that Andrew Jackson and his successors actually cared about the Cherokee and his years of delay and obstruction infuriated the American Executive and Army who then ordered the soldiers involved to use the harshest possible measures to remove the Cherokee.
Like the Kinney Rogers song goes, "You got to know when to hold them, know when to fold them, know when to walk away and know when to run." John Ross didn't, "know when to fold fold them" or "when to walk away."
The Book is well written and well documented and presents it's side of the story well and honestly. But, only one side is told. Imagine, instead if John Ross had realized that his stubbornness would result in the "Trail of Tears" and instead had lead his people to the West two years earlier.
This is an excellent book, about a good and decent man, that deserves being read by anyone that is interested in Cherokee history. To me, the mistake that John Ross made was in being too trusting of the American Government of that timeframe. We can all wish that his faith had not been misplaced.

it was very good. John Ross is my 4 times great-granfather and it was wonderful to read about the man and his journey with the Cherokee people.
Received quickly in near new condition. Would buy from again.
Insightful information on the Cherokee Nation during and around the period of the Cherokee Removal... Must read for Native American History enthusiasts.
