Dr. Mitchell Broward has thrown away his academic career and his family, and is now drinking himself to death in Huntington Beach, California. Terrifying specters assault him during his frequent alcohol-induced hallucinations, but those hauntings are suddenly interrupted by the appearance of a young man whose presence is in sharp contrast to the terror of Broward’s self-destruction. As a circle of mystery and murder tightens around Mitchell, the presence of his hallucinatory visitor brings him a final glimpse of hope for his own life.

The plot is engaging. The characters were fine. It seemed a little uneven, I was surprised to find how many books the author had previously published! I assumed it was written as a first book by a young author. It's hard to pinpoint what unbalanced it for me. I put the book down several times but always returned after several days to learn what would happen next.
One issue I had was the awkward "earthiness" of the writing. Several times I just thought, is this necessary for character development? Not as written. It was just awkward and a little juvenile. Many times it seems like Junior High locker room talk.
I enjoyed the allegorical nature. Watching the plot develop there were only a few surprises but none were needed. I did enjoy the foray into the mountains and the changing character of that woman. And the bartender's interests were a nice plot twist but it could have been developed further. The main character's unwillingness to surrender was very realistic for me as was his attempts to reconcile with his children. Some characters were cartoonish in their responses, for example, the young receptionist anticipating a permanent relationship after two brief meetings.
I know nothing of the author but wonder if he works with alcoholics. The hallucinations were scary and well drawn. I don't know if accurate.
I am afraid the intended audience will not get the message. But I recommend the book with the above reservations. I wonder if the whole "be present" issue could have been used more as a light thread appearing occasionally. (Just thought Mr. McNichols)

The Haunts of Violence edition by Mike McNichols Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

McNichols manages to incorporate layers of the interior life rarely found in thrillers this easy and fun to read. Though not for the faint-of-spirit, many will find it the best kind of Saturday afternoon page-turner, that leaves you pondering character and consequences and wild religious visions long after the details of who-did-what-to-whom have faded. He manages to write about alcoholic hallucinations as unexpected gateways to spiritual discovery without insulting the reader or judging his characters. His insight into the shriveled psyche of his murderer is unnervingly familiar, making the extremes of hero and villain within the scope of any person, and thereby the reader is most deeply drawn into the story.
Great book! The author knows how to keep you turning the pages!
Great reading!
I was hooked from the very beginning by the excellent character development and driving plot. I'm a fan of McNichols' work. He has a way of writing that reminds me of Jeffery Archer or Stephen King, and The Haunts of Violence sits well on the shelf next to novels by those well-known authors.

This was an excellent summertime, next-to-the-pool, book to read. I recommend it.
I read half of this book on a plane ride and the rest of it when I got home any time I could snatch a moment. In other words, I could "hardly put it down." It's a well told story, with good interweaving of scenes highlighting this or that character's perspective. In some ways it reminded me of William Young's *The Shack,* the way a t-shirted Jesus keeps showing up. For $4, it was well worth it as engrossing entertainment, and a kind of upbeat spirituality emerging from the darkness. There were several typo-graphical and grammatical slip-ups a good editor should have caught, but they were not terribly distracting.
I read pretty much everything Mike McNichols writes. His writing skills plus his gift of intriguing story-telling and cleaver plot-lines keep drawing me in. In this novel Mike introduces us to a bottomed out university professor living on the skids, estranged from his family, and suffering from graphic, alcohol-induced hallucinations which include a frequent visit of a young man in rock-band T-shirts and ripped jeans named Jesus. McNichols intertwines the life and hallucinations of the professor with several other captivating characters including an unsavory serial-killer out for gratification and revenge. The plot thickens, the suspense builds, the characters intersect and you won't be able to put down this page-turner until you find out what happens in the end.
